Arusha — The Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan could be the next two states to become members of the East African Community, EAC's secretariat in Arusha has revealed.
Ambassador Juma Volter Mwapachu, the Secretary General for the EAC stated during a press conference last week that DRC and Sudan have expressed interest in boosting the community membership from the current five to seven states.
Mr Mwapachu explained that the joining of both Sudan and DRC could become a reality within the second decade journey of the regional cooperation set to start with the establishment of common market in January 2010.
"DRC has discovered that it is more inclined towards the East, relying on both Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam harbors for its external trade while most of the Sudan economic and social deals face south towards Kenya, eventually these two states will become part of EAC," Mwapachu said.
The East African Community which sailed on November 30, 1999 with the establishment of the EAC treaty, then with only Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda as members, marks its first decade anniversary this week having added Rwanda and Burundi along the ten-year-long journey.
Speaking in Nairobi earlier on the he Head of Mission of the Government of Southern Sudan to Kenya, Ambassador John Andruga Duku was quoted by the media expressing his views that even if it was not the whole of Sudan then Southern Sudan which is closest to East Africa can be invited into the community as an observer state.
Mr Duku added that other East African states will benefit from the presence of oil in Sudan while they can also sell industrial goods to the country.
Sudan which is the largest state in both Africa and Arab world and DR of Congo the third largest country (by area) in the continent will together make East Africa the biggest regional community in the world. The integration of the two countries will also boost EAC population from the current 120 million to over 230 million.

Please be reminded and remember that a United States of Africa MUST be a reality and not just talking about it. Anything progressive for Africa and her people must be put into place.
It is said that it takes Africa 500 years to achieve what takes Europe or America 100 years to achieve.
The reason for this is believed to be part of the reason Africa was called the dark and backward continent. It is up to us African to annihilate this apparent fact.
It is ironical that a big percentage of African brilliant minds end up in the developed world. This is one point African leaders need to focus on and find a solution to. These educated African run away mainly because of three major reasons: political persecution, financial and job insecurity; poverty and disease.
The more practical solution to end this brain drain is in a political federation of East African and later Africa as a whole. A unified African nation will more easily greatly reduce these challenges if not eliminate them.
There is no doubt however, that the continent has made some fast growth rate points in some areas such as in the academics but still lacks behind in many more of the very basic and crucial areas.
Basic of these is sustainable industrial development which is dependent upon science/technology.
If countries like Pakistan, China and India have nuclear weapons today, and are seen as fast developing countries almost above and in some ways leading the world in economic growth and development as a result of industrial and science /technological advancement, Africa could emerge as a fast growing powerful state but only if she becomes an African Federation Nation.
I wonder when I hear some modern day Africans making such statements that there is no need to hasten the African Federation because of such petty issues as the spirit of nationalism.
While this may be true, because it is this same spirit that has become a stumbling block in relation to the European Union Once Currency move, with Great Britain not wishing to do away with her Pound Sterling... but it does not necessarily mean that we Africans cannot do away with what we see or perceive and understand to be fragmentation or weakening of our African nation.
If African can properly grasp the idea that we are what we are as independent countries with the borders we have upon which we base our so-called nationalist spirit, we can then move decisively to rid our selves of the mental prisons our former colonial masters placed us.
The benefits of East African (Read African) Unity far outweigh the disadvantages of nationalism based on a fragmented political system.
The free movement of peoples, goods, residence etc are more meaningful when existing under a one national government as it gives the citizens a more solid security and sense of belonging as opposed to the insecurity that goes with common African military take-overs and dictatorial regimes and their weaknesses that negatively affect national economies and destablizes the political system.
Where African independent countries budgetary planning comes in some hundred billions, other countries in Europe and the United States budgetary planning comes in trillions of US dollars. Being larger in land mass than Europe or America, with a fast growing population, Africa could regiuster high economic growth rates as a unified federation than when fragments the way she is today.
East African leaders we congratulate but we ask for more; move steadily to forge an East African Political Federation for the benefit of our peoples;
That is the only way and easiest means to eradicate ethnic skirmish or conflicts, genocides and economic as well as industrial and technological dependencies upon the so-called developed world.
In the world today, The United States, The European Unin, India, China and Russia all need a stronger and powerful competitor in an African Nation.
If the East African Federation can be forged let us say under a decade from today, these countries can rely on this new nation as a partner in economic, scince/technological and industrial contractual conglomerate with greater respect.
Such an achievement will help foster greater pace towards a more balanced economic and financial world order.
