Uganda: Another Woman Held Over Murder of UPDF Soldier

Another UPDF soldier, another death resulting from stab wounds, and yet another woman at the centre of the allegedly murder which took place in a city bar on Saturday night.

Daily Monitor has learnt that the Police yesterday arrested a woman, Irene Tumuhise, and are hunting for two men on suspicion of stabbing to death a soldier at the rank of warrant officer I following a quarrel at her bar on Entebbe Road.

Ms Tumuhise is currently detained at Lubowa Police Post in Wakiso District over the alleged killing of Grey Turyakika, a medical officer attached to Nakasongola army Barracks. According to the Police, the body of the deceased was found lying near the bar in Lubowa with a deep wound on the neck.

Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba said yesterday that they arrested Ms Tumuhise within the city centre while attempting to escape to her village yesterday morning.

"We have arrested Ms Tumuhise on the offence of murder. We are detaining her at Lubowa Police Post as investigations continue," Ms Nabakooba said yesterday.

The alleged murder of WO I Turyakika comes less than two weeks after the shocking death of former army commander, Maj. Gen. James Kazini, allegedly at the hands of his lover Lydia Draru in Namuwongo, a Kampala suburb.

How it started

According to the Police, the Lubowa incident started at night in Irene's bar when Turyakika and Ms Tumuhise developed a quarrel.

Turyakika was later found dead but police officials say their preliminary investigations indicate that Ms Tumuhise woke up in the morning and cleaned blood that was spilled in the bar.

"She cleaned the blood on the floor early in the morning but when we got her clothes we found that some blood particles were on them. We are to carry out scientific evidence to find out whether the blood on the clothes is that of the deceased," Ms Nabakooba said.

"In the morning, she told her neighbours that she had done a "very wrong thing" and was going to run away," she said.

Ms Tumuhise confessed to the Police that she had murdered Turyakika, but added that she didn't do it alone. She said she had carried out the act with the help of two men, whom she declined to name.

During a memorial for Gen. Kazini, President Museveni said the army was losing a lot of soldiers to "reckless living".
