Liberia: And the Winner Is...

Both President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and football star George Weah stormed several communities and brought traffic to a grinding halt in several parts of the city Friday in their last bid to woo voters for tomorrow's senatorial election in which their two parties are the finalists after 8 candidates were dropped in the first round.

The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) candidate Geraldine Doe-Sherif, pulled 33,874 votes in the first round while the ruling Unity Party candidate, Mr. Clemenceau Urey, took 28.329 votes.

Mrs. Sherif, with her campaign boosted by Mr. Weah, a 2005 failed presidential hopeful who left college classes in the US for the event, received the backing of some of Mr. Charles Taylor's ex-loyalists, amongst them Cllr. Charles Brumskine of the Liberty Party, who was also once member of the National Patriotic Party, serving as senate president after Mr. Taylor won the 1997 election and named him to the post. Several NPP members campaigned with Mrs. Doe-Sherif, including Mr. Taylor's estranged wife Jewel Howard. Mrs. Doe-Sherif was also a member of the NPFL, sources say.

President Sirleaf also took the streets to the cheers of several supporters to woo voters for Mr. Urey, an insurance executive.

Although Montserrado holds about a third of the voting population as of the last voters' registration, the election is seen key to 2011, with predictions that it will be a repeat between the footballer and Mrs. Sirleaf. Both sides are predicting landslide victories, but the voters hold the key and will decide tomorrow who will be the winner.
