Gambia: Man Denies Paedophile Charge

The criminal trial of one Alasan Bah resumed last Thursday, November 19, 2009 before Justice Moses Richards of the Special Criminal Court in Banjul.

The accused is alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a girl under the age of consent on May 18, 2008 at Kololi, KSMD. The accused, in his defence last Thursday, told the court that on the said day of the incident, he was chatting and drinking attaya (Chinese green tea) with some friends, when a lady came with a soldier from the former CDS, Lt General Lang Tombong TambaÂ's compound, and pointed him out as the one who had raped her daughter.

He said he was taken to Lang Tombong TambaÂ's compound before being taken to the Kotu Police Station and placed in a cell. The accused told the court that he was interrogated by the police but denied committing the alleged offence. During corss examination, the accused denied knowing the alleged victim, or her residence. Hearing continues on December 7, 2009.
