Liberia: Opposition Coalition Energizes Voters

"Now, they are serious. We must ensure that this country does not go back to one-party rule.", remarked an elderly man, as the float carrying an array of top-notch political leaders from various opposition political parties, cruised through densely populated areas of Montserrado county on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009.

The twelve-hour campaign trail started at the ELWA Junction in Paynesville City, Montserrado County, with a forty-foot float carrying aboard the Standard Bearer of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Ambassador George Manneh Weah flanked by Madam Geraldine Doe-Sheriff, the favored candidate of the opposition, Cllr. Charles W. Brumskine and Israel Akinsanya, Political Leader and National Chairman of the Liberty Party, respectively, Senator Jewel Howard-Taylor, Mr. Joe Wylie of the Alliance for Peace and Democracy, Hon. Lewis Browne of the National Patriotic Party, Mr. Michael Nahyu of the National Democratic Party of Liberia, Cllr. Theophilus Gould of the National Patriotic Party, party leaders of the Liberia National Union (LINU) of Amb. Winston Tubman, the Leadership of the National Vision Party of Dr. George Kaidii, among others.

Hundreds of supporters braved the blazing heat of the sun as they walked untiringly behind the convoy of an estimated seventy-five vehicles. It was indeed a long journey to cover in such a heat produced by the pre-summer season; but to the electorate, it was worth the price. "We will walk to show them that we are tired with this none....

It's no longer the time when they asked us to 'accept the results'. All we want is to see our leaders come together", were the words of scores of electorate who patiently toddled after the campaign caravan.

The message of the opposition leaders was simple and to the point: Vote Madam Geraldine Doe-Sheriff as the next Junior Senator of Montserrado County because she is the true reflection of your aspirations. In small pockets, people were heard discussing the two candidates, trying to inform their own decision to vote for either of the two. What appeared to weigh heavily in these discussions is the direction of the country with respect to delivering basic social services.

"Why should we give more power to the Unity Party-led government, especially in the Legislature, when the party is finding all the excuses for not improving our living standards?" an over-joy market woman at the Red Light Market shouted.

One could feel the chills of resignation on the faces of seemingly Urey supporters who stood alongside the main streets of Monrovia to get a glimpse of the intimidating scenes of the campaign procession. It was even more pronounced at the action field on the Old Road where a politically depressed group of Urey supporters had gathered.

The opposition coalition, moving like glacier, collected by-standers who had gone to collect their share of free cash and rice that was being dished up. "I am going to locate my voting card for the candidate of the opposition, a young man said as he ran behind the convoy.

"Could this be a shadow of things to come?" was the question asked by an elderly man, as he gazed at the swelling crow in amazement. To some, it was unbelievable to have the quality of opposition leaders who had hitherto remained locked in their individual world, come together in a chorus of support to a single political party, more so, when inducements of cash and job promise was rife within the circles of the ruling Unity Party.

By 9:00pm, the campaign caravan had retired to the "war room" of the opposition coalition on 10th Street, Sinkor, to draw up the final plan for '"Super Tuesday".
