Liberia: President Sirleaf Renews Calls on Voters to Turn Out for Tuesday's By-Election Run-Off

23 November 2009

President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has again appealed to partisans of the Unity Party and the Congress for Democratic Change to demonstrate political maturity, through mutual respect and tolerance, as they go about casting their votes and tabulating the results.

The President made the call when she addressed the nation on the eve of the Montserrado County by-elections run-off. The Liberian leader called on all those who stayed at home in the first round to come out and cast a vote for their candidate.

President Sirleaf also said that the national holiday decreed in Montserrado County to allow voters to exercise their franchise concerns all institutions-national or international-business houses and marketplaces. The Liberian leader said that all such working places should be closed from 6 AM to 6 PM. President Sirleaf said the holiday was not for government workers alone, but for everyone and must be respected throughout the county.

The President said she looks forward to a massive participation and a peaceful electoral process in the best spirit of democracy.

The Montserrado County senatorial by-elections will pit Clemenceau Blayon Urey of the Unity Party and Geraldine Doe-Sheriff of the Congress for Democratic Change on November 24, 2009.
