Nigeria: Investors Trade 560.34 Million Shares for N2.03 Billion

Trading on equities quoted on the Nigerian stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday recorded a total trade turnover of 560.34 million shares at N2.03 billion in 5,273 deals. This shows an increase by 49.71 million shares against 510.53 million shares valued at N2.40 billion in 6,392 deals which opened trading.

The banking sector remained the most active measured by turnover with 461.12 million shares valued at N1.44 million shares traded by investors in 3,013 deals. Turnover of the sector was lifted by activity in the shares of FinBank with N308.36 million shares valued at N214.82 million recorded by investors in 149 deals

The insurance sunbsector followed in activity with 37.81 million shares valued at N29.21 million recorded in 439 deals. Activity in the shares of AIICO Insurance lifted the sector's turnover with 11.23 million shares valued at N10.24 million in 188 deals.

The Food/Beverages and Tobacco sunbsector pulled 7.53 million shares valued at N126.43 million in 371 deals, to emerge the third most active sector for the day's trading.

Meanwhile, capitalization of equities dropped by N17.64 billion closing at N5.12 trillion against N5.13 trillion recorded last Friday. Similarly, the market All-Share Index closed lower at N21, 508.57, having dropped 126.79 basis points from the index which opened trading at 21,635.36.

The drop in market performance indices was due to losses recorded by highly priced equities, as a total of 43 equities out of the 71 traded equities lost between two to five percent of their value, against 28 that gained significantly.

Analysis of the market summary showed that Guinness Nigeria led the price losers table with N4.00 loss in share price closing at N132.00 per share, followed by UACN with N1.00 loss in price closing at N40.00 per share while African Petroleum (AP) lost 80 kobo to close at N34.00 per share.

Ecobank Nigeria dropped 75 kobo closing at N14.42 per share while Eternaoil Nigeria closed the top five losers table with 41 kobo share price depreciation closing atN7.84 per share.

The price gainers table showed that Nigerian Breweries (NB) led the gainers with 78 kobo closing atN63.99 per share, followed by Flour Mills Nigeria with 74 kobo addition on share price closing at N33.00 per share while CCNN topped its price with 53 kobo closing at N13.03 per share. Lafarge Cement Wapco Nigeria appreciated in share value by 50 kobo closing at N29.50 per share while Dangote Flour mills Nigeria closed the top five gainers table with kobo addition on its share price closing at N6.50 per share.

The five most traded stocks are FinBank with 308.36 million shares, Fidelity Bank with 36.95 million shares, First Bank of Nigeria with 26.64 million shares, Ecobank with 14.06 million shares and AIICO Insurance with 11.23 million shares.
