Zimbabwe: GNU in the Spotlight Again in the Poetic Journey

Bulawayo — Amakhosi Theatre Company will on Wednesday return with another hard-hitting play on the performance of the unity government.

Still basking on the glory of Cont Mhlanga's Three Principals, Bulawayo's premier theatre arts centre will premiere The Poetic Journey penned by Mgcini Nyoni.

The Poetic Journey is about a young man who refuses to celebrate the birth of the inclusive government because he does not see it changing his life for the better.

President Robert Mugabe, Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, and Deputy Prime Minister Arthur Mutambara formed the unity government in February following pressure from neighbours to end Zimbabwe's long-running economic and political crisis.

The play takes theatre enthusiasts down memory lane to the difficult transition from the Zimbabwe dollar to multiple currencies.

Mhlanga said: "The young man in the story finds himself faced with bills for service charges amounting to hundreds of dollars.

"His predicament is that he has not even set his eyes on a United States dollar bill but he is expected to part with hundreds of those bills to pay for his service charges."

The production features two of Bulawayo's upcoming poets, Sithandazile Dube and Bhekumusa Moyo in a three-man cast that includes Ria Moyo who plays the mbira.

"The producer of the play decided to use Mbira as an adaptation from the old days when the instrument was used as a religious way of telling stories," Mhlanga said.

The fusion of Mbira and poetry is expected to give birth to an explosive production.

Mhlanga, a thorn in the flesh for President Robert Mugabe's previous administration through his incisive plays described the production as a masterpiece.

Nyoni is also an author whose works have been published by amaBooks, a local venture.

"In his story, Nyoni tells a story that while politicians celebrate the establishment of the inclusive government, ordinary people have nothing to celebrate," Mhlanga said.

"The essence of the story is that for the generality of the people, it is still a journey where some travellers have arrived at a destination while others have not."

The play will run for four days.
