Nigeria: NHIS Coordinator Bemoans State of Healthcare

Abeokuta — South West Coordinator of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Mr. Taiye Adeleye, has bemoaned the State of the nation's health care system, saying NHIS was poised to addressing the trend.

Adeleye spoke yesterday in Abeokuta at a workshop organised by NHIS for ministries, parastatals and agencies in Ogun state.

He observed that there was imbalanced and inefficient resource allocation between the three tiers of government at the federal, state and local government levels, adding that this development was a bane to good health care delivery system.

The Coordinator, in his paper titled 'NHIS: An overview' noted that there are inadequate distribution of health care resources between urban and rural areas, as well as lack of functional referral system in the country.

Adeleye said a situation whereby health care has become expensive and out of the reach of the poor was unacceptable, stressing that the trend must stop.

He, however, hinted that NHIS has a vision of "a strong, dynamic and responsive government, parastatal (agency) that is totally committed to securing universal coverage and access to adequate and affordable health care in order to improve the health status of Nigerians."

Adeleye stressed that NHIS would always ensure standard and qualitative healthcare services across the country.
