Abuja — Contrary to calls from Nigerians for the sack of the Super Eagles coach, Amodu Shuaibu, and the recruitment of a world class coach to tinker the team to Angola 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and South Africa 2010 World Cup, an appeal has been made to Nigerians to allow the coach continue with his job.
Making this call yesterday in an interview with Trustsports, former scribe of the Nigeria Football Association, Alhaji Sani Toro, described the call for the sack of the Edo-born coach after qualifying the Super Eagles for the World Cup as unjustifiable.
Toro maintained that Amodu has done well by delivering on the mandate given to him by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) by securing the ticket to the South Africa 2010 World Cup, stressing that firing him now when the Nations Cup is less than two months away will be counterproductive.
"Nigerians should be patient with Amodu and allow him to take the Super Eagles to Angola come January. He has done what his employers (NFF) wanted him to do by qualifying us for the World Cup. Although, some Nigerians are not happy with his output while the qualification lasted, hiring a new coach now will do more damage than good.
"It takes time to build a solid team. Between now and January, there is no coach under the sun that we can hire that will perform any miracle. The time is not just there for us to experiment with any foreign expatriate or any coach at all," Toro reasoned.
The football administrator, however, said the position of the coach could be scrutinized after the African Cup of Nations, saying "Amodu's performance in Angola could be a better parameter for measuring his capability to take Eagles to South Africa. If he performs too badly, then the call for his replacement could be justified. But if his output in Angola is not too bad, then nothing should stop him from taking his team to South Africa."
Toro charged the Nigeria football ruling body to support Amodu in his bid to build a team that everybody will be proud of, adding that having confidence in the former BCC Lions of Gboko handler and criticising him constructively will serve as a morale booster for him.
