Nigeria: 'Women, Most Vulnerable to Climate Change'

Abuja — Reports have shown that women have crucial role to play in reducing GHG emission, global warming and climate change and they are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

This statement was made by the Minister of Environment, Mr. John Odey, at the conference on effect of climate change and global warming on women held in Abuja yesterday.

He noted that Nigerian women have been part of the campaigns being spear-headed by the Ministry of Environment to sensitize the people towards preparing themselves as well as devising adaptation attitude towards climate change.

He said that the conference is to further widen the scope of awareness about the impacts that climate change will have in Nigeria, especially on women and children, adding that the gathering underscored the fact that Nigerian women are very sensitive to the most challenging environmental issues of today, which is climate change. He added that the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has concluded that human activities are altering our climate system.
