Africa: Swine Flu - African Countries Meet to Discuss Vaccine Deployment

Abuja — Worried over the rapid spread of the influenza A, H1N1 virus in the African regions, representatives of African countries under the auspices World Health Organization (WHO) are meetings in Abuja to discuss the procurement and deployment the vaccines.

Speaking during the opening ceremony, WHO Policy Adviser on Vaccine Security Peter Cerrasco said all African Countries will receive free vaccines to cover 10% of the population.

Nigeria with a population of about 140 million people will receive about 14 million doses of vaccine.

The WHO policy adviser on vaccine safety said the donation by WHO was small contribution to help countries access the vaccines, while looking for ways to assist African acquire plants to manufacture the vaccine.

'We know that the vaccine we are providing will not go round all the population of countries, but we implore countries to come up with master plans on the best methods to deploy the vaccines to vulnerable or priority groups that will be of essence to the society, when the flu hits them'.

Earlier Dr Peter Eriki, WHO country representative for Nigeria said the week long workshop would prepare countries for the introduction of the H1N1 vaccines as well as help them structure plans to roll out vaccines when it is ready. As of November 2009 twenty-nine countries in Africa have recorded 14,868 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine flu with 103 of them leading to death, Eriki said.

He advised African countries to set up effective means through which the vaccines can be deployed while also looking for ways to cater for the groups that may not be captured in the budget.
