Nigeria: '73 Percent of Citizens Don't Use Modern Toilet'

Abuja — 73% of the population of the country do not have modern toilet facilities, the National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) by the Nigeria Population Commission (NPopC), has shown. The survey shows that only 27% of Nigerians have an improved toilet facilities as people who do not have either defecate outside or have toilet facilities that do not meet the laid down requirements.

It also gave a breakdown of the survey stating that the rural areas which are worst hit have 25% and the urban areas 31%.

The North West zone has the highest percentage of non improved toilets with a percentage 44% while the South West is having the least with a percentage of 16%

On the issue of improved source drinking water, the NDHS shows an improvement of 56% giving a breakdown of 75% in the urban area against 45% in the rural areas.
