Nigeria: Again, Yar'Adua Jets Out for Medical Check-Up

Abuja — President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua yesterday flewout of the country again to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for another round of medical check- up.

His spokesman, Mr. Olusegun Adeniyi, said in a terse statement that the President has gone for a follow-up medical check- up where he is scheduled to meet with his personal physician for a fitness exercise.

"While there, the President will call on his personal physicians in Jeddah for follow-up medical checks", Adeniyi said.

Yar'Adua's health status had generated a huge controversy in the past. During his presidential campaign in 2007, he was rushed to Germany for medical attention after he collapsed. The incident later fueled speculation that he had died. It took former President Olusegun Obasanjo to speak with him live on campaign stage to clear the air over the rumour.

In August last year Yar'Adua went to Saudi for treatment again but the journey was made highly secretive by the presidency. Top government officials told the nation that Yar'Adua had gone on the lesser Hajj. The action had attracted criticism from members of the public. The president embarked on another medical trip to Saudi Arabia on August 14 this year, which was made public.

Meanwhile, the President has forwarded copies of the 2010 National Appropriation Bill to the Senate President and the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

His position apparently became so due to the seeming embarrassing refusal of the two chambers of the National Assembly to cooperate to allow him present the budget last week.

The Senate had refused to join the House of Representatives in its chambers in line with an established tradition due to the crisis over the amendment of the 1999 Constitution in which the Senate is claiming supremacy.

Both chambers have refused to soft-pedal, thereby compelling the President to send copies of the 2010 budget to the two Houses for their respective scrutiny.

Reacting to the President's action last night, the Senate said what Yar'Adua did was to merely comply with the 1999 Constitution.

It said since the President had carried out what was expected of him, the Senate would start working on the budget and possibly pass it before the end of next week.

The spokesman for the Senate, Senator Ayogu Eze, however said the seeming crisis between the Senate and the House would not be the end of the joint sitting between the two chambers.

Meanwhile, the country's ruling party was said to have invited the leadership of both the Senate and the House of Representatives last night for a crucial meeting over the matter. The meeting was still going on as at the time of going to the press.

Ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration scheduled for Friday, the President has wished the Muslim Ummah and all Nigerians happy Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.
