Zanzibar — THE national soccer team, Zanzibar Heroes left Dar es Salaam today for Nairobi Kenya to compete in the two-week senior Challenge Cup to kick off this weekend.
The 26-man strong contingent comprises 19 players and seven officials.
The players are Abdi Kassim (captain), Mwadini Ali, Aggrey Morris, Suleiman Kassim, Abdallah Seif, Nassor Masoud, Sadik Habib, Ahmed Malik, Abdulhalim Humud, Abdulrahman Othman, Khamis Mcha, Haji Ramadhani, and Waziri Rajab.
Others are Mohamed Salum, Rashid Faki, Nadir Haroub, Abdughany Gulam, and Mohamed Abdallah. Officials in the list include Hemed Suleiman Moroco (assistant coach), Abdulfath Abbasi (technical advisor), Khamis Ali Mzee (team leader), Abdallah Saidi (physician), and Haji Ameir (ZFA vice president).
The team's send off party was yesterday whereby the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Culture and Sports Omar Dadi Shajak urged the players to play their hearts out to win the title.
"I know you will be travelling to Nairobi by bus from Dar es Salaam but this should not discourage you from winning the trophy", he said.
He said it was pleasure to travel by bus, saying "even big clubs like Manchester United use the same transport in Europe". The PS said that government contributed 10m/- in preparation of the team.
"You are going to represent Zanzibar, and your victory will make us all proud," Shajak said before handing over the national flag to the team captain.
Other countries to take part in the event include Tanzania Mainland, hosts Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Sudan.
