Uganda: Mkapa to Preside Over Makerere Reunion

The former President of Tanzania, Mr Benjamin Mkapa has confirmed his visit to Makerere University where he has been invited to preside over the university's Alumni re-union.

Makerere University's Senior Public Relations Officer, Mr Gilbert Kadilo, told Journalists at the Uganda Media Centre yesterday that the grand reunion shall take place on Friday at Makerere University Hall. The function will start with a public lecture.

"Although the university is 87 years old, we have not sat to review what we have gone and what we can do for the university. We need to engage the old students and come up with a common plan," Mr Kadilo said.

The event has been organised by the Makerere University Convocation and the university management.

"It will provide the former students with a cozy atmosphere to interact, share experiences as well as appreciate the current transformations and challenges facing their Alma mater," the chairman of Makerere University Convocation, Mr Bruce Kabaasa Balaba said.

Cards are on sale at the university at Shs500,000 for platinum, Shs200,000 for corporate and Shs50,000 for silver.

He said since President Mkapa was once a student of Makerere University, this would send a signal that the alumni have a role to play.

Some of the speakers for the day include Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, Ms Rebecca Kadaga, Mr Amama Mbabazi among others.
