East Africa: Uganda, Sudan Resolve Border Conflict

President Museveni and Sudan Vice President Salva Kiir have agreed to stop the border dispute between the two countries and attacks by Sudanese soldiers on Moyo residents.

The agreement was reached yesterday when the two Presidents met in Moyo to discuss the border dispute. President Museveni said colonial maps show the land belongs to Uganda. "We should not waste a lot of time talking about the border issues that were clearly marked by the colonialists," he said.

When the Sudanese soldiers attacked Gwerewam village in Lefori Sub-county, Moyo recently, they forced farmers to up root their crops. They claimed that the area belongs to South Sudan.

President Kiir said the attacks on Moyo were carried out by intruders trying to derail the peace with Uganda. "No body should divide us because we are one people and the border issue must be solved diplomatically," Mr Kirr said.

The two Presidents also gave a go ahead for construction of MTN mast at Afoji in Lefori Sub-county. During an August attack, 20 workers erecting an MTN mast in Afoji were arrested and caned by the SPLA soldiers, hence halting the work to date.
