Zambia: Banda Mourns Otema Musuka

PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda has learnt with deep sorrow the death of Mr Otema Musuka who died on Sunday.

In a statement released by special assistant to the president for Press and public relations Dickson Jere, Mr Banda learnt with deep sorrow the death of Mr Musuka, a former minister in the UNIP Government.

The president said Mr Musuka, who once served as minister of Commerce, contributed greatly to the development of the nation.

President Banda said Mr Musuka served the nation in a distinguished manner in various positions in Government.

"His death is not just a loss to the family but the entire nation," President Banda said in a letter of condolences to the widow, Georgina Musuka.

Mr Musuka also served as minister of State for Foreign Affairs, minister of State for Defence and Member of Parliament before he was appointed Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York.

"Our prayers go to you and the entire family during this difficult time. We pray that the almighty God gives you the strength to endure the pain of loss," Mr Banda said.

The president has declared a day of National Mourning in honour of Mr Musuka which would be observed on the day of burial, which has tentatively been set for Thursday, November 26, 2009.

On that day, all flags will fly at half-mast, while activities of entertainment nature will be suspended and only solemn music will be played on radio and television.
