Nigeria: Aliyu - Kill All Corrupt Officials

Abuja — It is time for Nigeria to adopt the Jerry Rawlings formula and the Chinese therapy of capital punishment in fighting corruption if it is to experience genuine growth and development, Niger State Governor Dr. Mu'azu Babangida Aliyu said in Abuja yesterday.

Speaking at a Public Partnership Forum, the Governor said there is no half measure and Nigeria must be prepared to fight corruption in all its ramifications "as a matter of life and death."

He said in order to succeed, "we must strengthen the legal frameworks of severely punishing all convicted corrupt officials, both in public and private so that corruption does not appear as a high-return and low risk activity, which is what our current court rulings portray, since convicted corrupt officials can go back to their loot after only a limited jail time in jail."

He said Nigeria cannot continue to pay lip service to fighting corruption while the culprits move freely without remorse, adding that the country must also empower its anti-corruption agencies so as to eliminate from the system the popular feeling that "it is not that officials are corrupt but corruption is official."

Governor Aliyu said it was the right forum to dwell on the issue of corruption because it has permeated all sectors with extensive government involvement in infrastructure projects, real estate development, government procurement and financial services.

At last there is hope that one day , this nation will wake up to a sane and dignified country. More voices are comming up to the wrought and bondage that has for long been the norm of social conduct. If we can hold important and direct leadership position in global capacities , there is just no reason for our own nation to be the last to enjoy mordern economic progress like India and China just to mention a few. Nothing short of the death penalty can infuse decipline in the hated culture of hopelessnes and massive corruption in Nigera .

We know that this cancaworm can be eliminated within weeks if the approprite sanction is put in place, but the very culprits hold the power to make this happen and the result has been devastasting to all Nigerians with moral decorum.

The world have no respect to Nigeria despite our oil power. Many nations flood to the country to loot and plunder with active conivance with people of authority in the country. Microsoft of late has created jobs to thousands of Indians right in their own country. Call for microsoft support and the guy helping you is talking to you in India . This is because the company have confidence in the nations work culture.

Corruption is antithesis to economic advacement ,that is why China declared war on it . It is worse than declaration of war . it insults the intergrity of the citizens and inhibit developement goals . Above all it fuels capital flight with leakages intead of linkages to a developing economy. It is worthy of note that Nigerians of notable calibre are coming to grips with solution to the endemic problem . Like I said some months ago , implement this policy today and see how quick we will see the result . It is the role of government to legislate conduct to influence behavior . This is the time , all of the programmes being put in place currently by the government has no meaning , they're unworkable without removal of this deadly worm . Afterall it is the same people that will implement whatever budgetry decission is made. Behold they're sharpening their fangs to do the usual damage to the economy .
