It takes sacrifice and real hard work to get where one desires to be in this world . There should be no quick fixes and quick returns; in essence we say forward ever backward never in our quest as a nation, to implement our sharp and innovative ideals towards industrialisation.
As The Gambia on Friday 20th November, joined the rest of the Africa continent to celebrate the UN Africa Industrialisation Day, we reminisce with delight the numerous efforts and giants strides made by the country under the abled and dynamic leadership of President Jammeh. The theme of this yearÂ's event is Â"Industrialisation for integration,Â" which highlights the inter-play between the two and indicated how industrialisation can help increase its share of global output; thus become more integral in the global economy Africa in particular.
The Africa Union Plan of Action for accelerated industrial development of Africa outlines a clear set of programmes, projects and activities to stimulate a comprehensive and sustainable industrial development process. AfricaÂ's pursuit of industrialisation is hindered by many challenges including armed conflicts, inadequate infrastructure, weak governance and institutions, limited financing and technological capabilities, domestic policies among others.
Nonetheless, The Gambia under the dynamic and visionary leadership of President Jammeh continues to enjoy a thriving economy and a smooth business ambience for all. The leadership has initiated and implemented series of effective development programmes and economic policies since assuming power in 1994. His programmes and policies touch all aspects of life; such as health, agriculture, education, energy, infrastructure, communication and industrial development.
The creation of numerous industrial projects and programmes as indicated in the establishment of Gambia Investment Promotion and Free Zone Agency (GIPFZA), the Green Industries , Kanilai Family Farmers among others, are products of the countryÂ's tireless commitment towards industrial development. The celebration of the industrialisation day concided with the fourth edition of the GCCI trade fair currently taking place at the Indepence Stadium. The trade fair to a great extent, serves as an avenue for business interaction, characterised by the exhibition of goods and services offered by both local and international business entities.
The most striking thing about the trade fair is the number of both participants and the nature of business exposure characterised by signing of MoUs between the Gambia and other economic giants such as the Republic of Taiwan, the USA and the trade liberalisation partnership between the EC and ECOWAS among others. This shows that the country is thriving well on an aptly commercial trading arena as envisioned by the Vision 2020 blue print.
