Uganda: MP Pleads Over Expulsion

Kampala — Buyaga county MP Barnabas Tinkasiimire has appealed to the executive board of the Islamic University (IUIU) over his expulsion over examination malpractices.

The assistant academic registrar in charge of the Kampala campus, Sheik Kasule Twaha, yesterday acknowledged receiving Tinkasiimire's appeal but declined to reveal details.

Tinkasiimire, an NRM Member of Parliament, was on Monday expelled from IUIU's Kampala campus, over examination malpractices during the second last semester in May.

Tinkasiimire, who was in his second year pursuing a bachelor's degree in law, allegedly smuggled written material into an examination. The note was allegedly in his handwriting.

Sources at the university said in his appeal, Tinkasiimire acknowledged the note, but blamed it on his political opponents, whom he said wanted him to be expelled from the university. He said he would reveal their names in Parliament.

The decision to expel Tinkasiimire and four others was reached during the university's executive board meeting held on November 5.

If the university maintain its decision, Tinkasiimire will have to apply in another university to begin afresh.

Another 80 students were also expelled over poor performance and absconding from classes.
