Nigeria: 'PDP Not Against Yar'Adua Group'

Abbas Jimoh

26 November 2009

Abuja — The Yar'adua for New Nigeria (YFONN) yesterday said that it is not a partisan organisation and that a recent statement credited to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is not targeted at the group.

Speaking at a press conference shortly after a meeting of state coordinators of the group in Abuja yesterday, Senator Paul Ukpo said that PDP is not against the emergence of YFONN, which is aimed at promoting and propagating the programmes of the Yar'adua administration.

He also condemned media reports which referred to YFONN as the official campaign organisation of President Umaru Yar'adua, saying the insinuation is mischievous.

"The PDP statement did not in any way mention the name of our organisation, therefore, it is unfair to have made such an insinuation, the media reports are unfair to both the PDP and YFONN...We are out to promote the laudable policies of Yar'adua's government, canvass for true democracy and zero tolerance to all forms of corruption in the interest of the nation," Ukpo said.

He said among others that the objectives of the organisation include provision of a feedback on the initiatives needed for Yar'adua's administration to remain consistent in transforming Nigeria to a model nation-state toward the realisation of vision 20-2020.
