Nigeria: Legislator Asks Govt to Probe Accommodation Problem in Mecca

Abuja — A member of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Harsanu Guyaba, has called on the state government to probe the scarcity of accommodation being faced by pilgrims from the state at this year's Hajj.

Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Muna on Wednesday, Guyaba urged the state government to set up a high-powered committee to probe those saddled with the responsibility of providing accommodation for pilgrims.

He said that although he was aware that government had spent a lot to provide decent accommodation for its pilgrims, some of them were abandoned and left to sleep on bare floors as a result of the shortage.

Guyaba alleged that between seven and nine pilgrims were forced to share a room instead of the three that was initially planned.

Reacting to the allegation, the state's Amirul Hajj, Justice Sabo Darazo, denied that there was congestion in any of the accomodation being occupied by pilgrims from the state.

"As far as government is concerned, adequate arrangements have been made to provide enough accommodation for the more than 3000 pilgrims from the state."

While noting that he did not have the time to visit the pilgrims "room by room" to ascertain the allegation, Darazo said he believed that there was no reason to experience congestion considering the elaborate arrangement put in place by government.

"For now, I am satisfied with the mood of the pilgrims," he said. NAN
