Kaduna — A rights group, Civil Rights Congress (CRC), has challenged Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan's recent declaration as reported in the media that Nigerians will no longer use generators for their industrial and private power needs come next year, adding that it will give the VP N1 million if it becomes a reality.
The vice-president was reported to have stated that the country will overcome electricity instability by next year, starting with the 6000 mw possible attainment by December 2009.
He said government is putting necessary machinery in place to meet all its targets in the power sector towards revamping the nation's economy.
In an interview with LEADERSHIP, CRC's President, Comrade Shehu Sani stated: "Can you imagine such a statement and big hallucination coming from the presidency. We know that by what is happening in the country, it cannot work. And we are betting with him that we will give him one million naira if it becomes a reality and if they failed as it will occur, he (VP) will pay one million naira to us".
His words: "Nothing is working in Nigeria if not sufferings. Electricity is not stable and there's no sound education. The health sector is in shamble. Nigerians have been denied their rights to life and good health by governments and have left ordinary citizens to the mercy of private hospitals, herbalists, and fate. "Nigerians have become victims of false promises, budgetary failures and insensitivities of our rulers. Nigerian hospitals have become a place where one goes to die. In a situation whereby public office holders and their families can afford to travel overseas for cataract treatment, other Nigerians too deserve better treatment at home because one's life is better than the other".
Commenting on Kano State governor's take on the state of the nation which Malam Ibrahim Shekarau said is working in wrong direction, the rights activist said, "Shekarau's views on President Yar'Adua captures the views of most Nigerians. The government at the centre is weak. Nigerians are fast losing hope and confidence in the administration. President Yar'Adua should wake up and recharge his government."
