Lagos — Transport fares within and from the Lagos to other parts of the country were jacked up yesterday as motor parks recorded a high number of travellers. Our correspondent gathered that in Lagos metropolis, transport fares were increased by 50 or 100 per cent.

Transport fares from Egbeda to CMS which was N200 before yesterday was increased to N300 by commercial bus operators, likewise fare from Ikotun to Iyana-Ipaja was increased to N100 from N50.

Transport fares from Lagos to Abeokuta and from Lagos to Ijebu-ode were increased from their N400 charges to N800 and N1000 respectfully. The fares from Lagos to Ibadan, Kaduna, Kano and other parts of the country were also jacked up by 100 per cent.

Some travellers who spoke to our correspondent at the motor parks said they expected the hike, as this according to them had always been the tradition during festivals. Meanwhile, prices of food stuffs and cloths remained the same as they were before the festival.

Most cloth and food stuff sellers complained of low sales. A cloth seller at Idumota market on the Lagos Island, Alhaja Karima Adeola, said they were not recording much sales like they did last year.

According to Alhaja Adeola, most cloth sellers in order to sell, reduced the prices of their wares.
