Tunis — Tunisia is observing on November 25, 2009, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The issue of violence against women is a source of concern for all countries of the world.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Tunisia recalled the important reforms it has carried out to empower women. It stresses the reinforcement of women's rights in the Personal Status Code (CSP) and their anchoring at the constitutional level; it also highlights the importance of education and promoting the participation of women in public life.
Tunisia was among the first countries to implement awareness and information programs that aimed at spreading the culture of human rights and the values of equality and modernity, including the dissemination of a culture to promote women's right and families in rural and urban areas.
In this context, Tunisia has taken the initiative to launch in 2008, the national preventive strategy against violent behavior based on a participatory action among public institutions, civil society and media, further enshrining human rights and showing the commitment to familiarize in younger generations to the values of dialogue and tolerance.
The current situation in the world with its armed conflicts and the growing phenomena of poverty, famine, disease and extremism, has made the promotion of women and their protection a priority at the regional and international levels.
Tunisia has also implemented strategy to fight against all forms of violence against women and ensure their safety and their right to a dignified life.
