South Africa: North West HIV, Aids Campaign Taken to Farms

26 November 2009

Pretoria — In the build up towards World AIDS Day, the North West Health and Social Development Department will be taking its HIV and AIDS awareness campaign to farming communities.

The campaign will run from Friday until World AIDS Day on 1 December in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati District.

Health promoters from the department and community health care workers, non-governmental organisations and the district municipalities will use this period to mobilise communities against the pandemic and step up efforts to reduce HIV infections.

Residents will also be urged to follow a responsible lifestyle.

On Saturday, MEC Rebecca Kasienyane will be in Mafikeng to handover food parcels to senior citizens and the disabled.

The 2009 World AIDS Day will be commemorated under the theme "I am responsible, We are responsible, South Africa is taking responsibility", which calls for collective response to HIV and AIDS.

The theme encourages everyone in South Africa from individuals, communities, business, and government to take personal and collective responsibility to stop new infections, provide care and support to those living with HIV and to ensure access treatment for all people in need.

Addressing the National Council of Provinces in Parliament last month, President Jacob Zuma said he wanted to use this year's World AIDS Day to mark the beginning of a massive mobilisation campaign by government against HIV and AIDS.

He said the campaign should reach all South Africans and must spur them into action to safeguard their health and the health of the nation.
