Uganda: Bush War Veterans to Get Gratuity

Kampala — Members of opposition political parties, who contributed to the National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation war, are entitled to gratuity, the state minister for Luweero Triangle, Nyombi Tembo, has said.

Nyombi Tembo, whose ministry is in-charge of civilian war veterans, clarified that the gratuity payment scheme which President Yoweri Museveni launched in Nakaseke last December, is not for NRM party supporters only.

"We neither look at party affiliation nor tribe because what is happening today has no relationship to what happened then," he said.

The minister, who was on Tuesday meeting veterans in Nakasongola district, assured them that the 'akasiimo' payment excise will cover about 60,000 people who were either guides, militiamen, informers, contacts or those who gave material support to the NRA guerrillas.

He said relatives of the veterans who died will be assisted.
