Nigeria: Murdered Corps Member - Police Debunk Rape Report

Maiduguri — Investigations into the gruesome murder of the late corps member, Miss Grace Ushang, has taken a new dimension with the recent medical reports carried out by the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) which indicates that the late corps member was not raped.

Briefing journalists at the police headquarters, Maiduguri, the Borno State Police Commissioner, Alhaji Abdu Ibrahim, said that the medical test was carried out by consultant doctors from the UMTH and NYSC doctors in the presence of the representative of the deceased family, but the result of the medical test did not indicate any sign of rape.

The commissioner stated that in connection with the investigation, nine corps members were arrested to help the police in their investigations, because according to him, the police act empowered them to invite anybody who has vital information that might help them in their investigation.

The police boss said that contrary to some media reports that the deceased was raped and killed when she went out in the evening wearing her NYSC uniform, that the deceased was wearing a short and an ordinary vest when the corpse was found, and not her NYSC uniform as reported.

Alhaji Ibrahim further said: "I wonder how those who found the corpse identified her as a corps member, and reported to her fellow corps members, since she was not wearing her NYSC uniform".

He said investigation into the matter has reached advance stage and promised to fish out the culprits no matter how long, because, according to him, culpable homicide investigation normally takes time to be concluded.

In another development, the police commissioner disclosed to journalists that his command has arrested three corps members in connection with cult activities and were summarily dismissed from the NYSC and will soon be charged to court.

He said from time immemorial where there are human beings, there must be crime and wondered why some people were accusing the police of arresting NYSC members in the course of investigations, adding that NYSC members are human beings and cannot be exempted from crime.

Meanwhile, at the time of filing in this report, all efforts to get the state co-ordinator for his comments proved abortive as he was said to have traveled out of the state and will not be around till after the Sallah break.
