Someone who returned to this city a couple of years ago after a stint in Europe admits he was amazed at how much transformation there was in the fashion industry. The girls' dress sense was very much in step with what he had seen in some of the fashion capitals of the world.
And his comment returned to me when I bumped into one of our own version of 'celebrity' at Garden City, wearing nothing else but a man's shirt with bling and bag. Sigh!
I like the idea that we are obviously not wasting all those hours spent before E!TV and peering over glossy magazine pages.
But...must we...? Everything? Even those fur-interior winter boots that lock in the calves? Look outside. 29 degrees Celsius. Halloo? Unless you are telling us you move with an air freshener for those times when you have to unleash the 'cooked' feet to the unsuspecting public...
I mean, when 20-year-old Rihanna pulls off her having-a-bad-day attire (usually it is terribly clashing outfits) and manages to look haaat in them, be sure you will bump into a 40-year-old madam on Kampala Road trying to rock the same outfit. With disastrous effects.
Then Amy Winehouse in a drunken, high moment steps out of her house wearing nothing but her estranged husband's shirt held together with a belt, and wham! Go to any club worth its name and see the sober young girls dancing away in daddy's and dzadzy's shirts!
Who needs trousers if Hollywood has dictated that shirts, blouses and dress-tops can work on their own?
Recently, a cousin visited me and after watching TV for a while came to a conclusion that sent me cracking a rib.
He said: "I am convinced by the time Jesus comes back, He will find us in the original Adam/Eve state. Naked. We have come full circle finally. God created us naked, then we opted for leaves, then animal skin, long dresses and then those started thinning. Where we are now? The next step is back to total nudity, then the Lord can take us."
And we have Hollywood to thank for that. For all the love Ugandans have for Nollywood, I wonder why those styles are not rubbing off yet! I am sure the men are not complaining though...
