Nigeria accounts for the highest number of Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) in the world, Minister of Health Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin has said.The health minister, who made this known at the foundation laying ceremony of National Vagina Fistula (VVF) Centre in Kwali area council, Abuja, said the administration is committed to addressing issues of VVF in Nigeria.

According to him obstetric Fistula particularly Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) is fast assuming alarming rate and of public health concern in Nigeria stressing that Nigeria currently bears the highest burden of VVF in the world.

He said when completed, the Centre will be the largest in West Africa and second in the world adding that it is going to be a standalone fistula treatment and training centre in Nigeria. He commended the UN Agencies and United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for securing the grant from the Japanese Government for the project and also the Federal Capital Territory administration for providing land for the project.
