FM radio stations often use jingles to stamp their footprint onto listeners' psyche. These usually take the form of a brief memorable musical piece, usually a song or instrumental in which the station name and frequency digits are mentioned.
Christian broadcaster 104.1 Power FM recently commissioned a new jingle and its "King of the Jingle" contest had eight renowned urban gospel music artistes give a shot at winning a Shs 1.5m prize. The artistes, who read like a "who is who" in urban youth gospel music circles, were S4J, Morgan Isaac, Kristo Fabulous, Exodus & Hum K, God's Image, H.O.P, Martin Seku and Soul 5.
A series of weekly eliminations from September 28 narrowed the contenders to just two; H.O.P and Soul 5, the finalists for the November 22 showdown held at Watoto Church. Station CEO Ben Mwine's nail-biting results announcement had Soul 5, a male singing/dance quintet beat the more live-music-inclined H.O.P in a closely contested race for listener SMS votes.
Soul 5 garnered a 55% votes with 3183 texts while HOP managed a first runner-up slot with a 45% votes at 2659 texts. It may have come off as a popularity contest but pop group Soul 5 won, thanks to an outside-the-box concept themed around a traditional folk Kiganda sound while H.O.P played it safe with a rock-tinged jingle. The "King of the Jingle" search capped the Power FM's Phat Fest 10th Anniversary celebrations.
