Nigeria: Ijebu North Kicks Against Imposition of Council Boss

Abeokuta — People of Ijebu North in Ogun State, has kicked against the state government's refusal to re-instate Chairman of the Council, Mr. Telle Ogunjobi, who was removed from office 11 months ago, by Governor Gbenga Daniel .

Thy people also condemned the imposition of Mr. Wale Oshiyemi, as caretaker chairman of the council area, leading to an uneasy calm in the area.

When THISDAY sampled opinions in the area, majority of the people accused Oshiyemi of master-minding violence in the area, with a view to giving impression of insecurity in the area, and as such, remain in office.

A staff of the Council who pleaded anonymity, said, "the head of the mobile police (MOPOL) unit at that time, Mr. Hamzat, at a meeting after the incident, gave the basis of his accusation when he stated that five minutes before the attack, he received a text from Wale Oshiyemi, asking him if everything was okay with his men."

He said the mobile policeman, who vowed not to delete the text message until the culprits are brought to book, was immediately transferred out of the state.

It will be recalled that Ogunjobi was removed from office over allegation that the Ogunjobi was privy to the violence that claimed lives at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Abeokuta, during a reconciliatory meeting.

The decision was criticised by the state House of Assembly, on the ground that due process was not followed, both in the removal of Ogunjobi, and installation of Oshiyemi as the caretaker chairman.
