Nigeria: Kwali Introduces Free Ante-Natal Care

Abuja — THE Acting Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Mr. Danlami Saleh Yebu, Tuesday said his administration is carrying out free anti-natal care services for pregnant women in all health centres in the 10 wards of the council.

Yebu disclosed this while flagging off the National Vesico Vaginal Fistula Centre (VVF), established by the Federal Ministry of Health, at Kwali.

He said the council has intensified the distribution of the free 'roll back malaria drugs and mosquito treated nets to various households across the council, adding that children under the ages of 5 years are treated free of malaria cases.

The council boss assured that his administration would continue to support the laudable programmes of the federal government in improving the health of people in the country.

Speaking earlier, Minister of Health, Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, said the ministry decided to establish the National Vesico Vaginal Fistula Centre (VVF) at the council in order to make it possible for women discriminated against the disease to have access to treatment.

He said the centre will soon become an attraction because of the influx of people into the city.

The minister commended the Millennium Development Goals, World Health Organisation, United Nations Development Agency for their support and vowed that the health ministry will utilize the resources given for the purpose effectively and transparently in order to generate more funds.

Highlights of the event were planting of trees at the centre by Chairman Senate Committee on Health, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo Bello, Minister of Health, Prof. Babatunde Osotimehin and Chairman of Kwali Area Council, Mr. Danlami Saleh Yebu.
