Ghana: Volunteer Group Appeals for Support

The Disaster Volunteer Group, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has appealed to the government and other NGOs for support to cover the correspondence, transportation and mobilisation of its members and supporters after sensitisation works and clean ups.

The group, which was established by youth based at Sakaman, a suburb of Accra, provides both educational and humanitarian assistance to natural disaster victims, and disaster prone areas.

According to the President of the group, Mr. John Afful, the group was established in July this year, due to the recent occurrence of natural disasters, particularly floods, in the Accra Metropolis.

Speaking to the Accra File when it visited certain areas, which included the Kwashieman footbridge, where the volunteer group was cleaning, he noted that the exercises had not been all that successful, for the reason that the group lacked certain working materials needed.

He told this reporter that most of their expenses during the exercises were financed from their personnel funds and loans, with some support from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).

Support received from the NADMO includes equipment such as wheelbarrows, cutlasses, rakes, hand gloves and other equipment.

"Unfortunately these equipments have not been enough to meet the capacity of the work and membership, especially at mass clean-ups and de-silting gutters," he said.

He, therefore, appealed for sponsorship in the area of funds and equipment to undertake their programmes and activities, which are held every weekend.
