Namibia: DTA Disgusted With Presidential Mercs

27 November 2009

DTA President Katuutire Kaura has strongly condemned newspaper reports that two new luxury limousines worth N$10 million were allegedly ordered for President Hifikepunye Pohamba's official use.

"The shocking revelation by the Informanté newspaper about the two Mercedes cars, for altogether N$10 million, is clear evidence of the ruling Swapo party's arrogance and abuse of trust vested in it by the Namibian people," Kaura said yesterday.

"President Pohamba's declaration about being against corruption and having zero tolerance for the abuse of Government money is now exposed as mere window dressing and exposes him as just another fat-cat politician who abuses his position to surround himself with luxuries when there are perfectly good vehicles standing idle in the Government garage."

Kaura also lashed out against the Office of the President's alleged spending of millions of dollars on six new Toyota Landcruisers recently, as reported in Informanté, "when half of our population is living on about N$7 per day".

That money could have gone into development and poverty reduction projects, the DTA president criticised.

By yesterday afternoon, the Office of the President had remained mum on the reports.
