Kigali — Despite finishing with Rwanda's Amavubi Stars got their 2009 Cecafa Senior Challenge cup campaign to a winning start, beating Somalia 1-0 in a Group B match at the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi yesterday.
Somali defender Badri Mwalimu beat his own goalkeeper in the fourth minute when APR midfielder Jean Claude Iranzi ran in the Somalia defence.
However, the former SC Kiyovu players turned from hero to villain when Tanzanian referee Israel Mujuni sent off in the 30th minute for unsporting behavior.
Meanwhile, defending champions Uganda scored twice to hit Tanzania mainland 2-0 in a Group C match played in Mumias.
Owen Kasule struck on the third minute when Mike Sserumanga completed the scoring with two minutes to go for the Uganda Cranes to register a good start in this 12-nation tournament.
Elsewhere, Zanzibar Heroes got off to a flying start when they hammered Burundi 4-0 in opening Orange CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup Group 'C' match.
Action continues today with Ethiopia taking on Djibouti in a Group A match at the Nyayo Stadium.
