Zambia: Goat Project Cheers Women

30 November 2009

A KAPIRI-MPOSHI women's group has commended the Government for uplifting the welfare of the less privileged in rural areas through the provision of goats.

Step of Hope of Mukonchi chairperson Grace Hamuzila said the Government was doing a great job in assisting the women folk in rural areas through the goat pass-on project.

She said this at the weekend when Central Province Permanent Secretary Denny Lumbama visited the women's group project in Mukonchi.

"We are grateful to the Government led by President Rupiah Banda for this great help. We used to cultivate tobacco but we had no market and with this goat project now, we are able to sustain our livelihood and take our children to school," Ms Hamuzila said.

The group started the goat project in 2007 with 13 goats but it has passed on over 40 goats to other women groups in the area.

"We want to ensure that the whole Mukonchi area benefits from this project so that the Government can add more of these similar initiatives. This project has improved our financial base and we are able to take our children to schools and hospitals," she said.

Mr Lumbama assured the women's group that the Government would soon reach the area under the on-going cattle-restocking programme.

He was happy to learn that the women group administered the goat project in a commendable manner and that many people had benefited from the project.

Mr Lumbama said the Government since 2007 had been setting aside K150 million for the goat project to benefit 38 groups every year.
