Kaduna — The 6000 megawatts of electricity promised by President Umaru Yar'adua at the end of the year is inadequate for the country, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) elder in Kaduna State has said.
Alhaji Abba Dansani said that what Nigeria needed to turn the economy around must pass what he referred to as "the three requirements."
According to him, the energy must be available, accessible and affordable. He said that affordability is the most contentious and it must be rationally addressed in relation to our depressed economy.
He advised President Yar'adua to depart from the former administration's failed strategy on how to improve power supply. He said that Yar'adua should identify a country that has the know-how and enter a government-to-government agreement with it, adding that this will eliminate corruption.
The PDP stalwart noted that as long as power is left for a ministry or any government agency, it will be bogged down by personal, group, regional and ethnic interests. He however said that the long term solution to the country's energy needs is to vigorously pursue nuclear energy. He advised that the nation should pursue this project with Niger republic and France.
According to him, Niger has the uranium which is the raw material used to generate nuclear energy while France has the technical know-how and Nigeria has the financial resources to fund the project.
"This will consequently boost our economies with a ripple effect to other ECOWAS countries", he said.

Mr President wake up and do what is right about this electricity project. If Ghana can wake up and be light up, how much more Nigeria that claimed to be the giant of African? You leader are not doing anything but eating up your our flesh, destroying and encouraging our youth to do nothing but corruption. Light up Nigeria and this will boost the economy and foreign investor will come invest in Nigeria which will equally create job opportunities. Nigeria has the money to successful complete this project. Let say NO to corruption and Generators dealers.
The is very vital issue to be considered by Mr President and his co leaders. With the look of things Nigeria can not move forward without a steady power supply. Most foreign investors that want to come to Nigeria got discourage with the electricity failure of the nation. Nigeria need to be light up day and night. The President and his man do travel to western world and i am sure they see and enjoy uninterrupted power supply. Why not do the same thing in your country? Nigeria have more than the financial resources that it need to put up this project without going to IMF for loan.
