Nigeria: Slain Journalist's Daughter Raises Emotions At Award Night

The daughter of slain Guardian Newspaper's assistant news editor, Bayo Ohu, Friday lifted up the emotions of guests at an award event in Abuja, when she dedicated the award given to her late father to her little sister, who was still in the womb when her father was killed.

Omolara Rhoda Ohu, who flew into Abuja to attend the Nigeria Media Green Carpet event, told a large audience that consisted of notable journalists and former Senate-President Ken Nnamani that the award given to her father by Fantagold Promotions Limited is dedicated to her little sister, who never had the opportunity to see her father as well as all journalists in the country.

Other journalists that received posthumous awards were Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Babatunde Jose, Ernest Ikoli, Dele Giwa, Abba Zorro and Ladi Lawal.

Initiator of the Nigeria Media Green Carpert, Kambili Osadolor Ehima said the yearly event is meant to celebrate dedication and excellence in the media.

She explained that media practitioners stirred up nationalism as well as worked tirelessly despite threats and have succeeded in delivering democracy to Nigerians.

"Unfortunately they have never been remembered and Fantagold Promotions came up with this event to appreciate and celebrate the legends and icons in the Nigeria media," she stated.

According to her, awardees were selected by the leadership of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, Nigeria Union of Journalists, National Broadcasting Commission, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, African Independence Television and Voice of Nigeria.

Speaking earlier, Barrister Azikwe, son of Dr Nnamdi Azikwe advised journalists to be fearless in their pursuit of news.

He reminded them of the motto of his father's West African Pilot that stated thus "Show the light so that people will find the way."
