Nigeria: One Dead, 27 Injured in Truck Crash

Birnin-Kebbi — One person was feared dead and 27 others injured in an accident involving a truck at the Gwandu Birnin-Kebbi junction in Kebbi State in the early hours of yesterday.

The injured are now receiving treatment at the Sir Yahaya Specialist Hospital, Birnin-Kebbi. The truck carrying livestock and grains was coming from Dogo Baga in Borno State and heading towards Birnin-Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital when the accident occured.

The driver of the trailer, Ahmed Haruna, told newsmen that he was misled by his boy, who claimed to have known Birnin-Kebbi Road but caused the accident because he could not read the road signs.

According to him, both his assistant and himself have never been to Kebbi State before, claiming that it was their first trip to the state.

Said Haruna: "I didn't know Kebbi State and I have not been to Birnin-Kebbi, but my boy, who claimed to know Birnin-Kebbi, misled me and I was on high speed when I suddenly saw a bend and the vehicle lost control."

A medical officer, Bello Modibo, in charge of surgical ward at the hospital said the injured victims were responding to treatment and will be discharged soon.

As at the time of filing this report, the vehicle was still at the scene of the accident surrounded by road safety officials.
