Uganda: Nateete Cops Compensated

Kampala — Twenty eight Police officers, whose properties were destroyed when suspected rioters burnt down Nateete Police Station, have been compensated. Police welfare chief Julius Shalita handed over the money to each officer at the same station on Friday.

Fifteen Nateete resident officers were given Shs500,000 each while 13 officers who work but do not reside at the station, were given Shs250,000.

Nateete Police Station was burnt by suspected rioters on September 10 when security agencies blocked the Katikkiro of Buganda, Eng. John Baptist Walusimbi, at Sezibwa Bridge from visiting Kayunga District.

Mr Shalita while handing over the money to the officers described the money as condolence fund since the amount of cash he was giving out was not proportional to the property they lost in the fire. "But after getting this money please don't go to Kamwanyi (a renowned bar hub near Nsambya Police Barracks) and drink it. You will get assaulted," Mr Shalita said.
