Jokes from MCs and Pablo livened up the humid day as Soul 5 took the jingle crown.
It was a hot Sunday and this made the auditorium stuffy and humid. This however did not stop a big number of people from gathering at Watoto Church Central to witness the coronation of Power FM's King of the Jingle.
Lots of rib cracking jokes from the emcees of the evening, Pablo of The Morning Show and Becky of The Evening Show on Power FM, and live energetic performances from Exodus, Martin Seku, Soul 5 and H.O.P made the evening worthwhile.
The jingle competition, which ran for eight weeks, started on September 28 with eight artistes namely; S4J, Morgan Isaac, Kristo Fabulous, Exodus and Hum K, God's Image, House of Prayer (H.O.P), Martin Seku and Soul 5.
Each artiste or group had to compose a jingle and each jingle got fair airplay throughout the day in each of the shows, to give the listeners a chance to identify the one they preferred. A jingle is a tune, ring, song or chorus which listeners can identify with.
Throughout the competition, the decision on which an artiste left the competition at the end of each week was entirely up to the listeners. They voted as many times as they wanted by sending a message to 8008. At the end of every week, the artiste with the least votes was eliminated from the competition during Go, a section during a programme to eliminate an artiste.
By Sunday last week, the competition had seen Morgan Isaac, Kristo Fabulous, S4J, Exodus & Hum K, Martin Seku and God's Image eliminated. It was now down to the final two - Soul 5 and HOP. The two weeks preceding the finale was the time given to listeners to vote for the best group.
When the moment of truth came, HOP and Soul 5 were invited to the stage. Silence befell the auditorium as the two groups, bowing their heads and holding hands, waited for their fate from Ben Mwine, Power FM's Station Manager - "The winner is ..." some silence and again, "The winner is ...Soul 5," he announced to a clapping and chanting audience.
They beat the in-house group (HOP) by scoring 3183 votes (55 per cent) to 2659 votes (45 per cent), winning the grand prize of Shs1.5m. The reason they won, according to one listener, was because their jingle is in Luganda and people love associating with their roots and culture. The runners-up got consolation prizes of solar powered radios tuned to Power FM.
