Kenya: Church Advises On Constitution-Making Exercise

Kenyans should ensure the current constitution-making exercise is not politicised the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) has said.

In a press statement, issued today-November 27, and signed by Archbishop Dr. Eliud Wabukala, ACK said the past efforts to review constitution have been frustrated by the politicization of the issue.

"The entire Constitution of Kenya Review Commission (CKRC) process of 1997-2005 failed to give is a new constitution because it was extensively politized and polarized", stressed the Church statement, read by Archbishop Wabukala.

The impact of that politicization was felt in 2007 and 2008, adds the Church statement.

Let us as Kenyans and defend the current constitution review process from being marred by partisan and sectoral interests, the Church's House of Bishops has advised in the press statement entitled: Justice Be Our Shield and Defender - A phrase taken from the National anthem.

The Church has urged the committee of experts of the Harmonized Draft Constitution of Kenya to commit themselves to listening to what Kenyans have to say about the draft constitution.

"Your duty is to ensure that all Kenyans get access to the Harmonized Draft Constitution with adequate time provided for reading, evaluating and preparing memoranda", points out the Church.

Considering that two weeks have gone by and many Kenyans still have not accessed the document, justice requires that the period of submission of recommendations be extended by another 30 days, the Church press statement further said.
