THE positive observations coming from qualified economic bodies on the performance of Zambia's economy is in stark contrast to some of the sentiments some people, especially those from the opposition would want the country to believe.
Some leaders in the opposition want the nation to believe that the country's economy is on its knees and they want to play the blame game where the buck will stop at the leaders in Government.
They conveniently do not want to point out that Zambia has weathered the storm owing largely to measures put up by the Government to forestall any further downward spiral of the economy, which did not escape the effects of the global recession.
To the chagrin of those preaching a doom and gloom gospel, a cross section of organisations that are better placed to rate the performance of the economy thinks otherwise.
These are positivist views based on what they have seen and proved rather than just some twisted ideas conjured up in the minds of some politicians bent on luring voters to their side at any cost.
Three major economic stakeholders have all expressed satisfaction with the manner the economy has fared and have predicted more positive results in 2010.
The Economics Association of Zambia, a body of educated economists believes that Zambia has performed well and was headed for a better economy than was anticipated.
The Zambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry, (ZACCI) has also observed that the stage has been set for improved economic activities for the country next year, thanks to a drop in inflation, currently at 12 per cent and upward prices in base metals, copper in particular.
Zambia Chamber of Small and Medium Business Enterprises, on the other hand, has equally expressed optimism that the country's economy will grow by more than six per cent this year, a positive indication of the prospects for the coming year.
The three bodies have attributed this performance to Government's adherence to sound policies that helped reduce the impact of the global crisis on the local economy.
It is interesting that these positive comments on the performance of the Government are coming from professionals who map and read events in the country.
Had these sentiments come from the people in Government, one would have thought they were blowing their trumpets.
