Nigeria: Sixty-Year Reign Impossible, Onaiyekan Tells Ogbulafor

Abuja — The president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr John Onaiyekan, has described the statement credited to the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Chief Vincent Ogbulafor that the party would rule Nigeria for sixty years as "rubbish and is projecting Nigeria in a bad light before the international community"

Dr Onaiyekan also warned the PDP government to stop inflicting poverty and hardship on Nigerians, adding that, "it is impossible to live in a country where affluence is in the hands of a very few who are surrounded by miserable people who are intelligent young graduates", stressing that "it is a recipe for total chaos"

The clergyman who spoke at the annual dinner for the Knights of St Mulumba, Maitaima sub- council, on the topic "Synod of Bishops for Africa" stressed that nobody gains by telling lies all the time.

According to him, it is callous for the PDP government to advocate for a one party state, lamenting that we make ourselves a laughing stuff to other parts of the world.

He said if elections cannot hold, political parties do not exist and a group of people decides that there are going to rule Nigeria as a one party state, one party state has been carried out for thirty years in many countries of Africa and is found to be bad.

His words: "When I heard our own Vincent Ogbulafor saying the PDP will rule Nigeria for 60 years, I said people abroad will say we are not serious.

"It is a sin against God to sit down doing the wrong things and think that God will save Nigeria, that is impossible. Our prayer to God will make sense if we are ready to repent and change our habits, if we don't change we keep planning evil, that is skimming on how to rig the next election and you are coming to church with millions of naira dancing "come and see what the lord has done".

According to him, "Because I am not the EFCC who is supposed to investigate the source of his money, but we know that God cannot be deceived or bribed, so the question is what are we going to do with the message of the synod with the title "Arise Africa?" Onaiyakan added.

Speaking further, the archbishop of Abuja added that we cannot talk of reconciliation, justice and peace without politics, saying the synod commends Catholics who are doing their best to clean Africa of corruption, and bad government.
