Zimbabwe: Police Blitz Nets 132

Harare — THE Zimbabwe Republic Police women's network has arrested three people for sexual offences and 129 others for various offences under an operation code named "Chawakadya Chamuka phase two of 16 days of activism against gender-based violence", countrywide.

The operation began on Saturday with policewomen manning roadblocks.

Of the 129, six were criminals on the police wanted list, two were arrested for theft, one for domestic violence and one for physical abuse.

The other 119 were arrested for public drinking, vending and threats of violence, among other crimes.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Andrew Phiri yesterday said the women's network was carrying out campaigns targeting crimes of passion, domestic violence and other related sexual offences.

So far, 79 campaigns have been carried out countrywide and reached out to 3 742 people.

The policewomen network, Supt Phiri said, was also carrying out roadblocks and other blitz, with lists of wanted persons especially rape.

Meanwhile, police from the National Traffic section have been deployed on major roads to ensure that the festive season is accident free.

A team led by police National Traffic (operations) Assistant Commissioner Bobby Murwira visited some of the blocks in the country.

He urged police officers to ensure all road users were sticking to traffic regulations.

Asst Comm Murwira also urged his officers to shun corruption, as the force would not hesitate to discharge them from their duties.

This comes in the wake of reports that some of the officers were manning roadblocks to extort money from motorists.

Asst Comm Murwira urged people to report any corrupt tendencies by their officers so that they will be brought to book.

He also urged road users to comply with police when they are carrying out their lawful duties. Police, he said, would not hesitate to arrest anyone breaking the law.
