Zimbabwe: ZNA Defies Illegal Sanctions

Harare — THE Zimbabwe National Army has managed to carry out all its training tasks under tough economic conditions as result of sanctions imposed on the country to effect illegal regime change, a senior ZNA officer has said.

Brigadier-General Douglas Nyikayaramba made the remarks yesterday while addressing more than 2 000 2 Brigade troops who are gathered in Harare for a week-long sports gala.

He said the ZNA defied the sanctions as it managed to conduct training for the troops with meagre resources because of the sanctions.

"I am proud to tell you that as a brigade we have managed to accomplish all our tasks as directed by the Army Commander (Lieutenant-General Philip Sibanda) despite the economic challenges.

"This sporting gala is a way of celebrating our achievements under a very tough economy which was caused by illegal sanctions imposed by Western detractors.

"We want to tell the country's detractors that the more tougher they subject our nation to (sanctions), they should remember that our army is also getting tougher," he said.

Brig-Gen Nyikayaramba said ZNA had also managed to groom a hardened, professional and disciplined army despite the economic challenges.

The army, he said, had been subjected to a lot of asymmetric warfare to deviate its allegiance to the country.

"ZNA has witnessed a lot of subversive efforts, but I am happy to inform you that you have stood the test of the times," he said.

"The tough times have actually made you a resilient and hard-hitting force that is the envy of many.

"The fact that you have accomplished all your tasks with constrained resources shows you can do extremely well when adequately resourced."

Brig-Gen Nyikayaramba also said sports played an important role in improving fitness and stamina among troops. "Sporting plays an important role in keeping you fit, which is really important in the discharge of your duties. This is also a good platform for you to interact and cement strong relations that will help you in combat," he said.

The troops will be involved in various sporting activities such as soccer, netball, volleyball and athletics, among others.
