Zimbabwe: Ministry Launches Probe

Masvingo — THE Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs has started an inquiry into allegations that Gutu resident magistrate Musaiona Shortgame criminally abused his office by allegedly demanding a bribe to free a convict.

The inquiry kicked off in camera at the Masvingo magistrates' court last Friday and was presided over by a committee comprising ministry officials.

Masvingo provincial magistrate Mr Thomas Mandityira confirmed the inquiry but refused to give details.

Criminal proceedings against the magistrate will begin on February 1 2010, with Shortgame facing corruption and abuse of office charges. Charges against Shortgame arose after he allegedly demanded US$300 from a woman whose son had been jailed at Gutu prison so that he could facilitate the convict's release.
