Kenya: Deal With Illicit Brews

30 November 2009

editorial

Nairobi — For a number of years now, many political and community leaders, have decried the proliferation of illegal brews that have been turning young men into zombies.

The most affected areas appear to be Nairobi, Central and parts of Eastern provinces, where joblessness and ready availability of cheap, unhealthy liquor have combined to turn youths into impotent louts.

Speaking in Murang'a at the weekend, Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta regretted that these brews were seriously retarding development in the region. That is an understatement.

Young men have, in all ways, failed to rise to the occasion, while women have sporadically been taking to the streets to protest at the sexual impairment of their menfolk, and a birth rate which is dwindling at an alarming manner.

Although he did not elaborate on the matter, Mr Kenyatta accused unscrupulous businesspeople of 'dumping' the highly addictive and debilitating brews in the region.

But what he did not say is what could have happened to the laws that are supposed to discourage the brewing of such deadly drinks.

Is it a dearth of laws that leads to this prevalence or could it be that the Provincial Administration and the police have singularly failed in their duties?

Once the source of the problem is identified, it should be easy to correct. That is where to begin to deal with the menace.
